Besides its multiple Indexes, this book also includes five excursus on a variety of problems. One is the still unsettled question of the location in north Italy of the villa called Cassiciacum. Most scholars agree that it was either at Casciago or at Cassago. The first is about fifty-five kilometers northwest of Milan, while Cassago is but half that distance to the north of Milan. Perler favors Cassago as the site of Augustine’s country interlude. To other arguments he adds the suggestion that Casciago is too far away from Milan to permit the apparent one-day trips made by Navigius and, possibly, Alypius. Rather recent archaeological studies of the Cassago area suggest that the villa of Verecundus may have been situated there.

 

 

 

Oltre ai suoi molteplici indici, questo libro include anche cinque excursus su una varietà di problemi. Una è la questione ancora irrisolta dell'ubicazione nel nord Italia della villa detta Cassiciacum. La maggior parte degli studiosi concorda sul fatto che fosse o a Casciago o a Cassago. Il primo si trova a circa cinquantacinque chilometri a nord-ovest di Milano, mentre Cassago è solo la metà di quella distanza a nord di Milano. Perler preferisce Cassago come luogo dell'intermezzo campestre di Agostino. Ad altre argomentazioni aggiunge il suggerimento che Casciago sia troppo lontana da Milano per consentire le apparenti gite di un giorno fatte dal Navigio e, forse, Alipio. Studi archeologici piuttosto recenti nell'area di Cassago suggeriscono che vi fosse situata la villa di Verecundus.
